What is Functional Medicine?

For many, traditional healthcare can feel focused on managing symptoms, with little time to consider the bigger picture. If you’re looking for a more personal, expert-led approach, one that goes beyond quick fixes and supports your long-term wellbeing, functional medicine offers a thoughtful alternative.

A New Way to Think About Health

Functional medicine is a patient-centred, science-based model of care designed to identify and address the root causes of illness, not just the symptoms. It recognises that the body is an interconnected system, where genetics, environment, lifestyle, nutrition, and emotional health all play essential roles. Through this holistic lens, Functional Medical Doctors create comprehensive, individualised treatment plans that support lasting wellness and a renewed quality of life.

How Does Functional Medicine Work?

Your experience begins with a detailed assessment, Functional Medical Doctors dedicate time to understanding your health history, environment, and daily habits. They explore the unique factors shaping your wellbeing, from genetics and nutrition to stress levels, sleep, and more. Advanced diagnostics and comprehensive testing are often used, enabling subtle imbalances to be discovered early, sometimes before symptoms arise.
Instead of a one-size-fits-all solution, your care plan is thoughtfully tailored to you. This may include dietary recommendations, lifestyle changes, stress management, non-invasive therapies, and, where appropriate, integration with conventional medicine. The aim is not only to address current symptoms but to lay a strong foundation for your long-term health.

What Can Functional Medicine Treat?

Functional medicine supports a broad spectrum of chronic and complex health conditions, including:

  • Digestive issues (such as IBS, Crohn’s, and food intolerances)
  • Hormonal imbalances and thyroid concerns
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Cardiometabolic health (heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure)
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Anxiety, stress, and mood disorders
  • Prevention and proactive health optimisation
  • Every person is different, and functional medicine recognises this by creating bespoke treatment programmes for each individual.

What Does a Functional Medicine Doctor Do?

Functional Medicine Doctors are highly trained healthcare professionals, often with experience in both conventional and integrative medicine. They look beyond standard protocols, spending time to build a complete picture of your health. By combining advanced diagnostics with a detailed understanding of lifestyle and environment, Functional Medicine Doctors work alongside you, supporting and empowering you throughout your health journey.

While Functional Medicine is not yet formally recognised as a medical specialty in the UK, our Functional Medicine Director, Dr Mayoni Gooneratne, co-founded the British College of Functional Medicine to help bridge this gap. Established three years ago, the college’s aim has been to support doctors in gaining recognition for their work in this field through the GMC appraisal process. What began as a shared vision has grown into a thriving professional body of over 70 UK GMC registered doctors. The BCFM is now working closely with the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) in the USA, who has taken them under their wing, to develop a formal accreditation pathway. This initiative is part of their commitment to establishing Functional Medicine as a credible, structured, and respected branch of modern healthcare.

Functional Medicine Doctors often hold memberships or affiliations with respected professional bodies such as the General Medical Council, British Medical Association, and Royal College of General Practitioners. This expertise ensures a rigorous, safety-first approach while providing access to a wider range of solutions than conventional medicine alone.

Functional Medicine vs. Conventional Medicine: What’s the Difference?

Aspect
Functional Medicine
Conventional Medicine

Functional medicine differs fundamentally from the standard medical model. Here’s how the two approaches compare:While conventional medicine excels at urgent and acute care, functional medicine seeks to understand “why” illness occurs, supporting you as a whole person and focusing on sustainable, lifelong wellbeing.

Why is Personalisation So Important in Functional Medicine?

No two people are the same. Personalisation is at the heart of functional medicine because each individual’s health is shaped by a unique blend of genetic, environmental, lifestyle, and psychosocial factors. Two people with the same diagnosis may have entirely different root causes and require different approaches.

By tailoring care to the individual, functional medicine can:

  • Address the specific drivers of illness for each patient
  • Increase the effectiveness and sustainability of treatment plans
  • Enhance patient engagement and adherence
  • Reduce the risk of side effects from generic treatments
  • Promote optimal health, not just the absence of disease

This approach is often described as the “4 Ps” of functional medicine: Predictive, Preventive, Personalised, and Participatory.
Functional Medicine Can Be Life-Changing

For many people, choosing a more personalised, root-cause approach has made a genuine difference in their lives. When care is tailored to your whole self, the results can be remarkable. Here are some of the key ways functional medicine can benefit your health and wellbeing:
Root Cause Resolution: Focuses on uncovering and treating underlying causes, not just symptoms, for lasting improvement and, in some cases, reversal of disease.
Personalised Care: Every plan is tailored to your unique needs, resulting in better outcomes and higher satisfaction.
Holistic and Integrative: Addresses physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing, and combines nutrition, movement, and stress management in care plans.
Prevention-Focused: Proactively reduces the risk of future chronic illness.
Empowered Patient-Doctor Relationship: Encourages active participation and fosters trust for long-term results.
Advanced Diagnostics: Uses comprehensive testing to detect imbalances or dysfunctions earlier.
Improved Quality of Life: Many patients report increased energy, better mental clarity, improved mood, and enhanced overall wellbeing.
